Cruising 'Solo' Is Not Cruising Alone Camaraderie includes all, yet privacy respected
 |
It's just past dawn and the cove is calm, but the cries of waking birds, the dampness of dew on the rail, and the scent of wood smoke fill your senses. A few of your sailing companions are scattered around the deck for the same taste of a Maine morning as you are enjoying. They might go below and share the experience with a spouse while you're having your first cup of coffee, but meanwhile you'll be greeting other early-morning risers and asking the cook about the morning's fare. Beluga Whale Rare in These Waters 'Poco' delights passengers on the Grace Bailey
| Passengers on the Grace Bailey were treated to an exceptional sight during the third week in July when a juvenile beluga whale swam up to the boat in Rockland Harbor. Maine Windjammer Cruises® is eco-friendly, and we knew to do nothing to entice the whale or to encourage it to stay. Read more |

Grace Bailey Wins Great Schooner Race Takes coaster class fourth year in five
 |
The Grace Bailey, with Capt. Ray Williamson at the helm, won the coaster class in the 2004 Great Schooner Race for the fourth time in five years. The fleet gathered behind Holbrook Island near the bird sanctuary south of Castine. As they moved out into East Penobscot Bay, a gentle wind came up, building later in the day to drive a good race. History of the Mercantile Coaster takes shape on Deer Isle beach
| Built in 1916 in the town of Little Deer Isle on the Eggemoggin Reach shore, the Mercantile was well suited for the coastal trade. Her shoal draft served her owners well by being able to take on and discharge cargo in small out-of-the way places inaccessible to deeper vessels. Those same characteristics make her ideal for cruising among the islands of Penobscot Bay today. Read more |

Crew Profile: First Mate Ben Loveless Hard working man on slow-moving boats
 |
Ben Loveless came late to sailing ships but not to seafaring, if a man can be said to come late to any job at the age of 26. He's worked on a commercial boat trawling for Atka mackerel out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, fishing across the Aleutian Islands to Russia. He's also worked on a long-liner out of Dutch Harbor. That's the type of fishing most of us recognize from the movie and book "The Perfect Storm". Read more |

Nautical Terminology: Talking Salty Getting around on our schooners
 |
You won't need to know any nautical terms to enjoy your sailing vacation with us, and you can disembark at the end of your sail with the same vocabulary you had when you boarded. On the other hand, you may enjoy getting into cruising mode or have some fun learning terms you'll likely hear onboard. Read more |
